 About Sail Numbers

Sail numbers are an important way of uniquely identifying a yacht for a variety of purposes. They are a requirement for racing, and could be critical in a search and rescue situation. For these reasons, we recommend that all yachts have a unique sail number.

You can apply for a sail number to be issued to your boat via the PDF application above. Sail numbers are issued sequentially and payment can be made by providing credit card details the PDF application or via direct deposit through.

Allocations are split in to four categories:

Next available number = $220
Transfer (for use when a sale of boat has taken place) = $110
Requested number (subject to availability) = $440
SYD Prefix (eg: SYD100) = $2200

Please note that Yachting NSW allocates the sail number to a vessel only, and does not include the actual sail numbers to apply to the sails. These must be purchased from a sail-maker.

Ownership

Ownership of the Sail number always remains with Yachting NSW.
The Licensee does not acquire ownership or any other intellectual property rights by virtue of the Licence Agreement.
The Licensee is able to use the Sail Number for as long as the Licensee remains a Financial Member of a Yachting NSW affiliated club.
Sail numbers are entered into the Yachting NSW database and this is linked to the Licensee's membership record.

Transfer of Licence

A Sail Number may be transferred only after the Licensee advises Yachting NSW of his/her wish to terminate the Licence and the proposed Licensee is able to meet the conditions required for the issuing of a Licence and the appropriate fee has been paid.

Sale of Vessel

Should the Licensee sell their vessel, the Licensee must notify Yachting NSW in writing immediately, stating as to whether they wish to retain the Sail Number for a new vessel, or if it is to be transferred to the new owner.

If the Licensee wishes to retain the Sail Number, the Licensee MUST remove the Sail Numbers from the vessel prior to the sale.

If the Licensee does not wish to retain the Sail Number, they must also include in the notification of Sale, the name and contact details of the new owner.

This is imperative as the Sail Number database must be kept up to date.
If a transfer of a Sail Number is not forthcoming the Sail Number will be made available for re-issuing.

Breaching this Agreement

Any individual found in breach of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.

Action may include termination of any Licence Agreement and the removal of the Sail Number from the register, making it available for re-issue.
