2007 NSW Secondary Schools Team Racing Championship

Cranbrook School Sails to Success

A jubilant Cranbrook School sailing team fought a hard and consistent campaign to win the prestigious 2007 NSW Secondary Schools Team Racing Championship.

The three day regatta, held at Point Wollstoncroft at Lake Macquarie, with its ten participating schools, experienced difficult weather conditions with hot temperatures and storms and unpredictable breezes throughout.

Each school had a team of up to seven competitors, giving all sailors plenty of opportunity to display their skills and talent.

In all, there were 60 races contended, but the trophy and the title came down to a contest between Cranbrook and Scots College, with the best of three races deciding the winner.  Although Cranbrook ended winning the final series 3-0, the competition remained very tight up until the finish on the last race.

An elated team captain, Ted Hackney, praised his team for their great efforts and thanked Scots and the other eight schools for their performances and team spirits.

Yachting NSW’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Stephen Leahy, was extremely pleased with the three day program,

“We had a great three days with the majority of the sailors and officials electing to spend the weekend up at this great site which was an added bonus as we could all get together at the end of the day and enjoy the wonderful location.

The racing itself was exciting to watch, and it’s thrilling to witness how these young sailors perform both on and off the water.  I was extremely impressed with all the competitors and would like to congratulate them all on a great regatta”, said Steve after presentation on Sunday.

Past winners of the annual event include Pittwater High (x 8), Davidson High (x1), Barrenjoey High (x2), Sydney Grammar (x1), Scots College (x3), St Paul’s High School (x1), Cranbrook x 1, and Mater Maria Catholic College who won the previous two years’ events.

Cranbrook and Scots College will now represent New South Wales at the 2007 Australian Schools Team Racing Championship which will be held at Sandy Bay Sailing Club/Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania on 14-18th June 2007.
